DPW Information and Reminders

SESC Permits: State Law requires Soil Erosion Sedimentation Control, (SESC), Permits for certain projects, especially those within 500 Ft of a body of water. Please keep in mind you may be required to obtain a SESC Permit and install and maintain SESC measures. Please call the Building Department if you have any questions regarding SESC Permits.

Building/Construction Reminders: Please obtain a City Permit for work done on/at your home. Homeowners sometimes end up complaining because they’ve paid several hundred dollars and they aren’t happy with the work that has been done. The City only issues permits to licensed and insured contractors. This helps protect you. Failure to obtain a permit will cost you double permit fees. Any questions on contractors should be directed to the Building Department at (734) 676-3952.

Certified Property Survey Reminder: If you are considering putting in fences, garages, homes, swimming pools, sheds, seawalls, docks, etc., please be aware that you may need to obtain a certified property survey. Please plan ahead and get the survey done early. Please feel free to check with the Building Department. Mortgage surveys will not be accepted.

If you live in Flood Zone 'A' or in 'B', and you anticipate new construction or substantial improvement to your home, we recommend that you apply early for a Department of Environmental Quality, (DEQ), Permit at least 2 to 3 months ahead of your anticipated start date.

Home Inspections If you plan on selling your home, please be aware that you will need to have inspections conducted on your home by the Building, Plumbing and Electrical Inspectors. Homes may be required to be brought up to current code. Please plan ahead to have your home inspected and allow time to have the necessary corrections made before you close on the sale of your home. For homeowners living on waterfront property with a berm, you also need to have a City Berm Inspection. Berm height needs to be at a certain elevation. Please check with the Building Department for details.

Compost / Yard Waste Collection: Compost and yard waste collection will be collected the same day as your trash pickup day. Tree trimmings less than 2” in diameter must be tied in bundles and must not exceed 4 feet in length. Larger limbs can be put out for chipping by the DPW. Yard waste may be placed in compost bags or loosely placed in 32-gallon trash containers. Containers and yard bags must be labeled “Yard Waste”, and must be separated from other waste, and cannot exceed 50 pounds. Compost and yard waste pick-up day will start April 6th and 7th 2004, (Tuesday/Wednesday); depending upon which day your regular trash pick-up day is on.

Flood Information: Information concerning the National Flood Insurance Program is available at the DPW & Water Department building at 28002 N. Gibraltar Road.

Minor Home Repair: Assistance with minor home repairs is available to Senior Citizens and low-income residents who qualify. For more information please call (734) 676-3952.

Water Bill Reminder: When you receive your quarterly water bill, please remember to check your inside water meter reading with the outside meter; the numbers should read the same on both meters. If there are any discrepancies, please notify the DPW immediately. Discrepancies will be the responsibility of the property owner.

Lead in your Drinking Water: Important information about your drinking water can be found in the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). This annual report will be available at City Hall and DPW.
