About the City Administrator:

Hired on May 21, 2012, Derek M. Thiel holds the position of City Administrator for the City of Gibraltar. Derek’s background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.

Derek has over a decade of experience in municipal government working previously for the City of Cadillac and the Township of Grosse Ile. Derek’s additional certifications include the credential of Master Citizen Planner from Michigan State University, Licensure from the State of Michigan as a Certified Storm Water Operator, and holds a S-2 Certificate from the MDEQ as a certified Waterworks System Operator.

Responsibilities of the City Administrator:
The City Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the City in coordination with the Mayor, Council, City Commissions and Department Heads. Additional responsibilities of the City Administrator include, overseeing the Department of Public Works, the Downtown Development Authority, serving as the City’s Human Resource Director, and to serve as the City’s primary contact with other Local, State and Federal government entities.
